I started working in ceramics in High School but it started earlier than that because my father bought a small kiln one year so we could all make Christmas Ornaments.
When I was in school at the University of Miami. I met a ceramic graduate student who told me I had to go to the Kansas City Art Institute. I start at the Art Institute in Graphic Design but two weeks into the semester I switch my degree to ceramics. Ken Ferguson was my teacher at the time.
I am a teacher so I work whenever I get the time to make. My studio is at school and at my house.
My influences are the environment, in Miami, Florida, that I grew up in. I love the lush vegetation and bright light. My sculptures are directly influenced by these sources. My pottery is influenced by my ceramic education and the exposure to all things clay. I fell in love with functional pottery and wood firing, salt, and reduction firing in the early 80's and still feel just as excited every time I unload a kiln.
I have taught and mentored many young ceramic artists. Hunter Stamps, Kyle Carpenter, Josh Copus, Maria Andrade Troya just to name a few. I have been teaching at UNC Asheville for 26 years.
Some of my mentors include Ken Ferguson, Clary Illian, Victor Babo, John Gill, Tony Hepburn, Val Cushing, Josh DeWeese. I have many other mentors including my family.
Clay is the best material ever!!! It can do anything and is found in everything. It is the most amazing material.
